Bausch & Lomb Inc. failed to formally report nearly three dozen foreign cases of fungal eye infections later linked to one of its contact lens solutions, according to a federal warning letter. Bausch & Lomb didn't report the 35 serious injury reports by April 7, as required by law, after Singapore

Federal disease control experts and leading eye doctors have formally concluded that Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc was the only contact lens solution contributing to an outbreak of potentially blinding fungal eye infections earlier this year. Users of a recently recalled contact lens solution by Bausch & Lomb were more than 20 times as likely to develop a potentially blinding eye infection as nonusers. The CDC study released today shows that 164 confirmed cases of the corneal infection fusarium keratitis were reported in 33 states and a U.S. territory from June 1, 2005 to June 30, 2006. Ninety-four percent of those cases were among soft contact lens wearers. When researchers compared the risk of infection among contact lens wearers, they found users of the recalled contact lens solution, ReNu with MoistureLoc, were more than 20 times as likely to develop the infection as nonusers. |

On May 19, 2006, the CDC released an MMWR Dispatch updating its ongoing multistate investigation into fusarium keratitis occurring in contact lens wearers. The CDC findings continue to show an increased risk for fusarium keratitis linked to using Bausch & Lomb's ReNu with MoistureLoc in the month prior to the onset of infection. |

Bausch & Lomb Inc.'s handling of eye infections potentially associated with one of its contact lens solutions is giving the company more than just a black eye. A U.S. health authorities struggle to find the cause of a spate of rare fungal infections afflicting contact lens users in 17 states, Bausch & Lomb has taken what many see as a self-destructively passive role in dealing with customers and investors—breaking rule No. 1 in crisis management. |
